Water Filters

“Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink anywhere!” is a phrase used by a sailor to declare his desperate need for portable water. In today’s world with our aging infrastructure, pollution, and green house effects on our climate, we may soon be crying the same phrase. The importance of reusing the available water sources to make portable water will require the use of water filters to purify otherwise unusable water. The nature of any filter is to collect containment. This means we need replacement water filters.

Most appliance manufacturers are now producing refrigerators with water filter systems built in to supply cleaner drinking water than regular tap water. As a homeowner with one of these refrigerators that filters my water, questions arise:”Is it necessary to replace my water filters?” “When should I purchase a replacement water filter?” and “Can I install a replacement water filter?” I will attempt to answer these three questions about replacement filters.

Is it necessary to replace the water filter in the refrigerator? The answer is a resounding YES. As the water filter cleanses the water, it traps particles and containments in the filter. The collection of these particles builds up overtime and reduces the flow of water through the filter. With the reduced flow, the icemaker has to work harder to produce ice and overheating can occur. It is much cheaper to pay for a replacement water filter than replace an icemaker. How often does a water filter need to be replaced?

Depending on the make and model of refrigerator and the usage of the filter replacement time may vary. However, most manufactures suggest replacement of water filters every six months. It is best that you check the manufacture owner’s guide to determine when a replacement water filter is required. The owners guide will give you the proper size, and model number and time of replacement. In lieu of an owner’s manual, it is best maintain a regular schedule for replacement of the water filter. Replace the water filter at the same time you replace the batteries to your smoke detector that is every six months.

The final question is: “Can I install a replacement water filter?” Manufactures make the replacement of water filters relatively easy. However, if you are like me, mechanically challenge, the best option may be calling your local appliance repairman to ensure proper replacement of the water filter.
